Reading Skills Activities

Reading is for everyone
  • Aim to read for 20 minutes a day. You can read books, e-books, comics, graphic novels, manga, magazines or newspapers. You can listen to audiobooks. You can even read the lyrics to your favorite songs or albums, or read subtitles while watching your favorite TV show, movie or anime. It all keeps your reading muscles SUPER strong.
    • Practice makes progress! Did you know: If you read 20 minutes every day, you’ll read about 1.8 MILLION words a year!
  • Teens and adults can play Book Bingo. Grab a board from your branch or download one here.
  • Visit your local branch or sign up online on our website for a free Library card. Did you know you can access all sorts of free resources online with your card? You can:
    • Download the Libby app for e-books and e-audio books
    • Check out comics and graphic novels, movies, TV shows and music on Hoopla
    • Read magazines on Flipster
    • Get free tutoring help from tutor.com
  • Reading and writing go hand and hand! Write a poem, story, letter, song, etc. and share with your family and friends.
    • Bring what you write to the Library if you’d like to make a copy that we’ll put on display on our community shelf!
    • Fill out the “I Am” Poem in your Summer of Learning booklet.
  • Practice storytelling. Share or even act out your favorite story or play. Ask a family member to share a story with you about their life. Draw a picture about something fun you did today. Write a journal about what you did this summer.
    • Stories can be told through words, writing, illustrations, and even through feelings. How do these stories make you feel?
  • Comics are for everyone! Have you read a comic book, graphic novel or manga? Have you tried writing and drawing one of your own?
    • Comics combine visual art and writing, and use both kinds of storytelling to emphasize the other.
