Every year, we ask staff members around the library system what their favorite reads published in this year were. 2025 is no different, and we have a stellar lineup of fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels.

49 Days
Agnes Lee crafted a beautiful, haunting graphic novel titled 49 Days, which, in Buddhist tradition, is the number of days the dead must inhabit the afterlife before moving on. The story follows, almost wordlessly, Korean American Kit, as she makes her way through a vast, unchanging landscape bereft of life. Meanwhile, here on earth, her family and friends learn to live their lives without her.

[Earthsea
Ursula K. LeGuin’s fantasy classic, The Wizard of Earthsea, was finally given the graphic treatment it deserves (by Fred Fordham) with the release of volume one in the series. This adaptation captures details that others have missed, notably the wizard Ged’s darker skin color. If you haven’t yet read this series, start here with young Ged as he learns the ways of names and magic, and struggles to contain the shadow he releases in a prideful dare, chasing it around the world before a final confrontation.
