Amy Tan Discusses 'Where the Past Begins' at The Seattle Public Library Oct. 25

Amy Tan, the New York Times-bestselling author of "The Joy Luck Club," will share her memoir about life as a writer in "Where the Past Begins," from 7 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636 . Tan will appear in conversation with Seattle writer Laurie Frankel.
Programs and events are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required. Parking is available at Central Library garage for $6 after 5 p.m.
"Where the Past Begins" explores the relationship between fiction and emotional memory and reveals the inspirations for Tan's extraordinary fiction. It delves into her memories of a traumatic childhood, confessions of self-doubt in her journals, heartbreaking letters to and from her mother, and how she used spontaneous storytelling to unleash near-forgotten memories that became the emotional nucleus of her novels.
Tan is the author of "The Kitchen God's Wife," "The Bonesetter's Daughter," "The Valley of Amazement" and two children's books. She was also the co-producer and co-screenwriter of the film "The Joy Luck Club." Her essays and stories have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, and her work has been translated into 35 languages.
Frankel is the bestselling, award-winning author of three novels, including "This Is How It Always Is." Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Publishers Weekly and many other publications.Books will be available for purchase and signing.
