September 8 - October 28, 2017
Central Library, Level 8
This exhibition showcases fifty books that represent a variety in style and structural approach of finely crafted design bookbinding. We thank each and every participant, as the competition and exhibition would not have been the same without each and every book!
The OPEN·SET exhibition showcases pieces from forty artists around the globe.
The OPEN·SET competition was developed in response to the burgeoning interest in finely crafted design bookbinding in the United States. Sponsored by the American Academy of Bookbinding, binders of all levels and from all over the world were invited to participate. The competition was designed to encourage both new binders and professionals, with an opportunity to win cash prizes. Seventy-nine submissions were received.
Catalogs containing a compilation of all the submissions are available for purchase at the FriendShop or directly from the American Academy of Bookbinding.
The submissions went through a formal "Blind Jury" process, in which the judges were unaware who bound each book. All professional binders, the Jurors were Cathy Adelman, David Esslemont, and Eleanore Ramsey. They awarded cash prizes for First, Second and Third places. There are also several bindings that were given a "Highly Commendable" designation, particular to a notable feature in the book.
