'Wattstax': Film Screening & Dance Party at The Seattle Public Library Aug. 24

The Seattle Public Library will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Wattstax concert with a screening of the documentary "Wattstax," followed by a Stax Records-inspired dance party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636 .
Library events are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required. Parking is available in the Central Library garage for $6 after 5 p.m.
In 1972, Stax Records hosted a concert called Wattstax (often referred to as the "Black Woodstock") for the African-American community of Los Angeles to remember the Watts Rebellion and celebrate black music and culture.
The evening will feature a discussion of Wattstax's historical context and a screening of the 103-minute documentary concert film, which is rated R. The film will be followed by a dance party featuring music from and inspired by Stax recording artists.
