The Seattle Public Library is partnering with Colectiva Legal del Pueblo, Seattle Public Schools and the ACLU of Washington to offer immigrant rights and family safety planning workshops at two locations.
Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required. Workshops will be offered in Spanish and English. Spanish text is available in the Library's Calendar of Events.
These workshops aim to mitigate the effects of a family member-many times the head of a family-being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Participants will learn how to develop a family safety plan, gather relevant documents to fight a deportation case and support someone who is detained.
By creating plans for children in mixed-status households, parents will be able to plan for the prospect of separation by designating temporary legal guardianship. At the workshop, families are guided through filling out general power of attorney documents that give authority to a spouse or another person to make decisions in the event of a separation.
Other topics covered will include the most recent updates on executive orders, as well as past policies, memos and executive orders that have shaped legal and ICE practices.
