Board The Seattle Public Library's New Bookmobile April 11 at City Hall
In celebration of National Bookmobile Day, the public is invited to tour The Seattle Public Library's new bookmobile between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, in front of the Seattle City Hall Plaza, 600 Fourth Ave.
Everyone is invited to explore inside the bookmobile, check out books and materials, visit with staff, use the Wi-Fi, sign up for a Library card and more. Free Library tote bags will be available while supplies last.
After 22 years of service, the previous bookmobile was retired due to ongoing mechanical issues and an inability to find replacement parts.
The new bookmobile will serve over 42 child care facilities and preschools that serve low-income families, providing books to over 2,200 children each month.
The vehicle will also visit a variety of Seattle locations and community events this year, including the Spring Into Summer community carnival hosted by Future Families of Washington from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23 at the Rainier Beach Community Center, 8825 Rainier Ave. S., 206-386-1925. "For over 85 years, The Seattle Public Library has provided valuable and essential services across our city through our bookmobile program," said Valerie Wonder, managing librarian for Community Engagement Services. "The bookmobile open house will provide a unique opportunity for anyone to experience the bookmobile firsthand and learn more about what we have to offer."
National Bookmobile Day recognizes and celebrates the role of bookmobiles and direct-delivery outreach services in fulfilling the mission of libraries. National Bookmobile day is sponsored by the American Library Association.
Funding for the new bookmobile is provided with generous support by The Seattle Public Library Foundation.
