Fact Sheet for Improvements to the Ballard Branch

The Ballard Branch closed May 9, 2016, for improvements and reopened June 20, 2016. A public celebration was held June 21, 2016.

After 11 years of heavy use, the branch needed to be recarpeted. While the branch was closed for that work, the Library also consolidated staff service desks, added comfortable seating, grouped most public computers in a single area and added self-checkout stations.

The changes were based on branch usage and trends in library services and are part of City Librarian Marcellus Turner's vision for The Seattle Public Library. One of his five service priorities is "re-imagined spaces" - redesigning spaces in our libraries to better meet the changing needs and expectations of patrons.

The branch, which opened in 2005, was built under the 1998 voter-approved "Libraries for All" bond measure that renewed and revitalized libraries across the city.
