Adopted by the Seattle Public Library Board of Trustees on July 27,1999

SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
RESOLUTION ______

A RESOLUTION affirming the Board's commitment to conserving healthy and mature trees on library sites and providing direction for realizing such conservation.

WHEREAS, the Board recognizes that our existing trees substantially enhance Seattle's character, conferring historical, cultural, horticultural, environmental, and aesthetic value on the City.

WHEREAS, the Libraries For All projects involve building and renovating Seattle City Libraries, thus necessitating a special commitment to the preservation of trees on library sites, and;

WHEREAS, the Board is committed to balancing the functional needs of Libraries For All projects, the architectural character of the buildings being built or renovated, neighborhood design objectives, and the goal of conserving significant trees on library sites, and;

WHEREAS, in planning and accomplishing the Libraries For All projects involving renovating and building Seattle City Libraries, the Board is committed to ensuring that such projects will proceed in accordance with the policies set forth in the City's Comprehensive Plan;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES:

Section 1. Policies

The Seattle Public Library Board of Trustees, in its capacity as administrator of the Libraries For All renovation and construction projects, does hereby affirm its commitment to conserving and protecting significant trees on library sites. The Board recognizes the importance of incorporating existing healthy and mature trees into the construction plans, and will fully consider the significant value of such trees when resolving infrastructure conflicts, in compliance with policy L205 of the City's Comprehensive Plan. As much as possible in balancing the various objectives of the projects, through careful planning before and during construction, the projects will proceed so as to protect the trees and the long term health of their canopies and root growth.

Section 2. Steps

Towards accomplishing the policies described in this resolution, the Board will gather information about trees on Library sites and provide it to those who will undertake the design and construction of the projects. The Board will inventory significant trees on Library Sites, and the Board will also solicit information, advice, and input from the public regarding specific trees and the effects of the projects on trees, in general. The Board will provide information gathered from such activities to the architects and landscape architects hired to design the projects. The architects will be alerted to and instructed to adhere to the policies described in adopted City Regulations, regarding the conservation of significant trees on library sites. Where significant trees cannot be preserved or protected due to functional demands of the projects, design constraints, or other reasons, the Library will plant three new trees for each significant tree lost to replace, over time, the aesthetic and environmental value of the lost trees.

Adopted by the Seattle Public Library Board of Trustees this _____ day of _____________, 1999.
