Magnolia Library nominated for landmark status
The Landmarks Preservation Board unanimously voted to nominate the Magnolia Library for landmark status at its meeting on Feb. 7, 2001.
That means board members will have an opportunity to visit the library and consider what aspects of the building they might designate as landmarks. The board will hold another public meeting to further consider designation of the Magnolia Library at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, in the Arctic Building, 700 Third Ave., 10th floor conference room. If the branch is designated as a landmark, the Library will submit its plans to expand the library to the landmarks board, which will review and comment on the proposed work.
At the same meeting, the landmarks board voted not to nominate the Ballard and Henry libraries as landmark buildings.
Landmark consideration is part of the public review process of structures that are important to the life and heritage of the city. Libraries fall under this review process. Buildings and structures more than 25 years old are eligible for Seattle landmark nomination. The landmarks board evaluates buildings before they are altered or demolished. By evaluating our buildings now, we avoid any disruption to the building process later.
