STATEMENT FROM THE BILL AND MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION
November 8, 1999

On November 24, 1998, a $20 million gift from by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the Seattle Public Library Foundation was publicly announced. It was and is the intent of Bill and Melinda Gates that $15 million of their gift be applied toward the capital construction of neighborhood libraries as outlined in the Libraries for All plan approved by the voters on November 3, 1998. Their gift is to be applied toward the $25 million in private funds required to complete the overall capital construction program and is not given for the purpose of expanding the construction program beyond that which was approved by the voters.

Of the remaining $5 million, $4 million is to support the expansion of the book collection programs and $1 million to increase the effectiveness of the Library in serving special populations. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is pleased that as a result of this $20 million gift, the Seattle Public Library Foundation made a commitment to increase their private campaign goal from $40 to $60 million, thereby increasing the fund-raising goals for books and materials, replacement technology and programs that serve children, teens, people with special needs, and others.

We have confidence in the decisions made by the Library Board of Trustees to implement Libraries for All to the greatest benefit for all the people of Seattle.
