The Seattle Public Library

Libraries for All

Proposed
1998 Capital plan
for the
Seattle Public Library

Submitted March 13, 1998

Montlake Library

Needs and Opportunities:

The smallest of Seattle's neighborhood libraries, with only 1,574 square feet, Montlake occupied a converted retail store since 1944. New shelving and furniture, along with other interior improvements were added in 1993 at a cost of $29,455, and a new computer was recently installed. Heavy neighborhood patronage and use by students at the nearby University of Washington warrant replacement and expansion of the Montlake Library.

Recommendations:

Replace the existing building with an expanded facility to provide:

  • Total program area of 5,000 square feet

  • Expanded seating and book collection

  • Upgraded technology services and equipment

  • Adequate and fully accessible parking

  • Expanded service at 48 hours per week

Estimated capital costs: $2,573,000

Next Steps: Assuming passage of the capital bonds, the community will be invited to participate in key siting, service development, and design discussions for an expanded Montlake Library to open in 2004.

Montlake at a Glance:

Service profile: This library's collection of picture books is heavily used by local children, working parents, and caregivers. It enjoys a great deal of walk-in traffic by retirees and U of W students, and its travel and gardening books are particularly popular with area residents.
