Madrona-Sally Goldmark Library

Needs and Opportunities:

Named for its neighborhood and a long-time community activist, the Madrona-Sally Goldmark Library opened in a converted fire house in 1973. It is heavily used by area residents and students attending the nearby Madrona Elementary School. The building was upgraded in 1986 at a cost of $84,854, but problems remain with its layout, program and work areas, and electrical and ventilation systems.

Recommendations: Improve the existing building to provide:

  • New seating

  • Expanded book collection

  • Upgraded technology services and equipment

  • Better electrical, communication and computer connections

  • More efficient circulation desk and work areas

  • Air conditioning

  • Modern mechanical system

  • Expanded service at 48 hours per week

Estimated capital costs: $255,000

Next Steps: Assuming passage of the capital bonds, the community will be invited to participate in design and service development discussions for Madrona- Sally Goldmark improvements to be completed in 2005.
