Columbia Library

Needs and Opportunities:

At 5,838 square feet, Columbia City is the smallest of the Seattle branch libraries funded by Carnegie grants. The original building was designed by W. Marbury Somervell and Harlan Thomas and opened in 1915. It has been extensively renovated since 1986 at a cost of $710,506. While still useful, the building suffers from severe space limitations and inefficient organization.

Recommendations:

Renovate and expand original building by 5,440 square feet to provide:

  • Total program space of 11,278 square feet

  • Greater seating

  • Expanded book collection

  • Special areas serving children, young adults, and adults

  • More computer work stations and instructional areas

  • Modern electrical, mechanical and air conditioning systems

  • More efficient lobby, circulation desk, and staff areas

  • Additional parking

  • Better access for the disabled

Estimated capital costs: $3,232,000

Next Steps: Assuming approval of capital bonds, the community will be invited to participate in design and service development discussions for an expanded Columbia City Library to open in 2003.

Service profile: Columbia City's classic Carnegie library is a beacon within the surrounding historical district and neighborhood. It serves a large number of Asian-language readers and users seeking information on immigration and English-as-a- second-language programs. An active group of volunteers offer homework assistance, and the library works closely with nearby schools in promoting reading skills through programs such as the Global Reading Challenge. Columbia City's multi-purpose meeting room is a venue for many community meetings.
