About the Design Assignment

The Library's intent was to work with architects to learn how they think about design and how that might relate to the site, special conditions and the program of the Seattle Public Library. This assignment was designed to be accomplished by a small number of people - not a large dedicated staff. The architects were not required to develop building design concepts, but to show us how they would begin thinking about a design project. Its purpose was not to judge finished design projects, but to help us know the architects and what it would be like to work with them. The Library provided the paper and specified tools the architects used.

The architects will describe and explain their drawings, which will be displayed by a visual presenter. There may be a few clarifying questions from the Architect Selection Advisory Panel and the Library Board.

The Design Assignment: Introduce Us to Your Design Perspective

Please prepare a set of visual images offering your ideas, impressions and observations of the project to design the Central Library. These ought to include, but not be limited to such aspects as natural light, site characteristics, context, major program imperatives, the entry sequence, the relationship between interior and exterior, technology and building flexibility.

The number of drawings is only limited by the time you have to present them, which is one half hour, of a 45-minute allotment per firm, allowing time for questions by the Library Board or Architect Selection A advisory Panel. The sketches should be hand drawn on the paper provided. You may use the pens provided, pencils, or watercolor.

All drawing should be submitted by 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, to Stacy Carter, administrative assistant to the Capital Program Office, located on the fifth floor of the Central Library. We will not review your drawings prior to your presentation. An overhead project will be used to display the drawings on a screen so that those in the audience, as well as the Library Board and Advisory Panel may see them.

Library staff will be available to you on Monday (May 10) and Tuesday (May 11) during the day if you wish to visit the current Central Library. Please be aware, however, that the new library will be organized somewhat differently then the current building. The program document reflects this revised organization.
