LIBRARY ASKS CONTRACTORS TO PREQUALIFY FOR MONTLAKE AND SOUTHWEST BRANCH CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

The Seattle Public Library has asked general contractors to submit their qualifications in the first step to rebid the construction of the new Montlake Branch and the expansion of the Southwest Branch.

Contractors are invited to submit their qualifications by 2 p.m. Thursday, June 2. For more information, contact Justine Kim, Library project manager, The Seattle Public Library, Capital Program Office, 1000 Fourth Ave., Seattle, WA 98104, (206) 615-1329.

Both construction projects have been bid recently and bids have come in higher than anticipated.

The Library believes that prequalified contractors will be more likely to submit competitive bids for the projects because they will know they are competing against firms that the Library has evaluated as being able to complete the work.

A pre-bid meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 23, in the Washington Mutual Foundation Meeting Room 1, Level 4 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave. Library officials will be present to explain the process and answer questions.

After the firms are prequalified, the Library will ask them to submit bids for the specific projects, most likely in July.

The estimated value of construction work is between $2.1 million and $2.55 million for the Montlake Branch, and between $3.66 million and $3.84 million for the Southwest Branch. The projects will be awarded as separate contracts to the lowest qualified bidder of each project.

Weinstein A|U Architects + Urban Designers designed the 5,652-square-foot Montlake Branch, which will have an expanded collection of books and materials, more seating and more computers, and a 3,100-square-foot parking garage. The new branch will replace the existing 1,574-square-foot library, which is located in a converted retail store at 2300 24th Ave. E.

Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects designed the expansion to the existing 8,213-square-foot Southwest Branch; the project will feature an updated collection, more computers, new seats and shelves, and an improved interior layout for a total 15,000 square feet.
