MEETING ON SITING A NEW BRANCH LIBRARY IN SAND POINT SET FOR MARCH 23

A community meeting to discuss possible locations for a new branch library in Sand Point is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 23 at the Wedgwood Presbyterian Church, 8008 35th Ave. N.E., meeting room. For more information, call David Kunselman, Library senior capital projects manager, (206) 386-4096.

The meeting will include a presentation on potential sites by the Library’s capital program staff and a discussion of the opportunities and challenges of each location. City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs and members of The Seattle Public Library board of trustees will attend to listen to public comments about the siting options. People also will be encouraged to suggest other possible sites.
Library siting criteria require that branches be situated in areas frequently visited by all segments of a community, close to or on primary streets and transit routes, and highly visible to passers-by.

In 2000, $1.4 million was earmarked from the Opportunity Fund for a 5,000-square-foot Sand Point Branch with the assumption the branch would be a tenant improvement project in an existing building. The Opportunity Fund was created as part of the “Libraries for All” (LFA) bond measure to be used for new or unanticipated neighborhood library capital needs for underserved areas of Seattle.
Voters approved the $196.4 million LFA bond measure in 1998. The bond money, which can be used only for construction of libraries, is funding new and improved branches, in addition to the new Central Library. To date, the Library has completed 17 projects; 11 other projects are in the planning, design or construction phase.

The Seattle Public Library Foundation continues to raise funds from private sources to enhance the public bond commitment and keep pace with the demands of patrons for a high level of library service. Every dollar raised will ensure a level of excellence in the Library’s facilities, collections, and programs that would not be possible through its tax-based support alone.
