NORTHGATE BRANCH, COMMUNITY CENTER, PARK GROUNDBREAKING CANCELED; PROJECT TO BE REBID

A ceremonial groundbreaking scheduled for noon Saturday, July 24 for the new Northgate Branch, community center and park has been canceled after construction bids came in higher than anticipated.

The Seattle Public Library and Seattle Parks and Recreation will rebid the project and will keep the public informed on its progress.

A bid opening on July 15 drew submittals from three general contractors that were over the construction budget, in part due to a spike in the price of steel. The estimated construction cost for the project was $7 million. The apparent low bid was almost $2 million over budget.

The design team will study the design of the facilities to determine how to build the project within budget. The Library and Parks hope to rebid the project in early 2005 and reschedule the groundbreaking ceremony.

City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs and Park Superintendent Ken Bounds said they regretted the delay, but stressed they had a responsibility to voters to stay within budget. The voter-approved Libraries for All bond measure, a community centers levy and the Pro Parks Levy are funding the projects.

The Miller/Hull Partnership designed the project, which includes a 10,000-square-foot library, a 20,000-square-foot community center and a 1.67-acre park. The project will be built on the site of the Goodyear store (the former Bon Tire Center) at Fifth Avenue Northeast and Northeast 105th Street and the commercial site one lot north.
