NEW MONTLAKE BRANCH CONSTRUCTION PROJECT TO BE REBID

The Seattle Public Library will rebid the construction of the new Montlake Branch after bids came in higher than anticipated. The Library hopes to rebid the project in early 2005.

A bid opening on Nov. 4 drew submittals from five general contractors that all were over the construction budget. The estimated construction cost for the project was $1.7 million. The apparent low bid was more than $500,000 over budget.

The design team will analyze the bid prices and recommend design revisions after evaluating materials, finishes, program needs, durability, and aesthetics.

City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs said she regretted the delay, but stressed the Library has a responsibility to voters to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars. The “Libraries for All” bond measure, which voters approved in 1998, is funding the project.

Weinstein A|U Architects + Urban Designers designed the 5,652-square-foot branch, which will have an expanded collection of books and materials, more seating and more computers. The new branch will replace the existing 1,574-square-foot library, which is located in a converted retail store at 2300 24th Ave. E.
