The public is invited to see the design of the expansion of the Lake City Branch from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Lake City Branch, 12501 28th Ave. N.E. For more information, contact Douglas Bailey, Library project manager, at (206) 386-4173, or douglas.bailey@spl.org.
Library patrons may stop by any time during the open house to view the design for the 5,987-square-foot expansion. Bailey and designers from ARC Architects will be present to explain the design and answer questions.
Plans call for expanding the 9,013-square-foot branch, which was built in 1965, to 15,000 square feet. Seattle's Landmarks Preservation Board voted in June 2001 to designate the branch as a landmark building.
The $3,788,201 project will feature an updated collection of 66,700 books and materials, more seats, a meeting room, upgraded technology and more space for books. The expanded branch will be part of a municipal center that also includes a neighborhood service center, a community center, the Albert Davis Park and a parking garage.
The expansion budget had been $2,920,000. At its Sept. 24, 2002, meeting The Seattle Public Library board of trustees revised the budget to $3,788,201, which included increases for inflation, the Library's contribution for parking to implement the Lake City Civic Center Plan, and an increase in the project's maximum allowable construction cost to accommodate a seismic upgrade, higher costs for hazardous material abatement, additional design work, process costs and construction costs due to the historic landmark designation.
The expansion project is part of the $196.4 million "Libraries for All" bond measure that Seattle voters passed in 1998. The plan calls for improving or replacing all 22 branches, building five new branches and building a new central library.
To date, the Library has completed the NewHolly, Wallingford and Delridge branches. The new Central Library and the Capitol Hill Branch are currently under construction and planning and design is underway for more than a dozen other branches.
The Seattle Public Library Foundation is in the midst of a "Campaign for Seattle's Public Libraries" with the goal of raising $77.5 million from private sources to enhance the public bond commitment. Every dollar raised will ensure the library system reflects our community's needs in buildings, books, technology and people, long into the future.
