The Douglass-Truth Branch, 2300 E. Yesler Way, will remain open for the interim because construction bids for its expansion project came in higher than expected.
The Douglass-Truth Branch was tentatively scheduled to close at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 17. The closure date was to have been finalized after The Seattle Public Library received and reviewed construction bids.
A bid opening on April 5 drew submittals from three general contractors, which were over the estimated construction cost. The Library’s estimated construction cost was $3.8 million. The apparent low bid was $4,593,000.
The Library’s capital program office will work with cost estimators to determine which categories of work came in over budget and to understand the causes.
The Seattle Public Library board of trustees is expected to make a decision on how to proceed by late April.
Schacht/Aslani Architects designed the expansion of the existing 8,008-square-foot branch, which will feature a larger, updated collection of books and materials, more room and better accessibility for the African-American Collection, a new children’s area, more seating and computers, larger and more efficient staff work areas and upgraded electrical, mechanical and ventilation systems.
