PUBLIC INVITED TO JUNE 10 OPEN HOUSE TO VIEW DESIGN OF DOUGLASS-TRUTH BRANCH EXPANSION PROJECT

The public is invited to see the design for the expansion of the Douglass-Truth Branch of The Seattle Public Library from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 at the Douglass-Truth Branch, 2300 E. Yesler Way. For more information, contact Frank Coulter, Library project manager, at (206) 615-1621, or frank.coulter@spl.org.

Coulter and designers from Schacht/Aslani Architects will be on hand to explain the design. Library patrons may stop by any time during the open house to view the design, ask questions and fill out comment forms.

Current plans call for the expanded branch to be 16,493 feet. The 8,008-square-foot Douglass-Truth Branch opened in 1914. Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation Board voted in November 2001 to designate the branch as a landmark building.

The $4.8 million expansion project will feature an updated collection of books and materials, more room and better accessibility for the African-American Collection, a new children’s area, more seating and computers, larger and more efficient staff work areas, and upgraded electrical, mechanical and ventilation systems.

The project is part of the $196.4 million “Libraries for All” bond measure that Seattle voters passed in 1998. The bond money, which can be used only for construction of libraries, will fund improvements to all 22 branches, build five new branches and build the new central library.

To date, the Library has completed the NewHolly, Wallingford and Delridge branches. The new Capitol Hill Branch is scheduled to open Saturday, May 31. The Central Library and the Beacon Hill and Rainier Beach branches are currently under construction and planning and design is underway for more than a dozen other branches.

The Seattle Public Library Foundation is in the midst of a “Campaign for Seattle’s Public Libraries” with the goal of raising $77.5 million from private sources to enhance the public bond commitment. Every dollar raised will ensure the library system reflects our community’s needs in buildings, books, technology and people, long into the future.
