THE SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY SEEKS CONTRACTOR TO EXPAND THE DOUGLASS-TRUTH BRANCH

NOTE: BID OPENING DATE CHANGED TO: Tuesday, April 5, 2005

The Douglass-Truth Branch of The Seattle Public Library moves into the construction phase with the Library’s call for a general contractor to expand the branch to better serve the community.

Contractors are invited to submit bids by 2 p.m. Thursday, March 31. For more information, contact Schacht Aslani Architects/Eric Aman, 1932 First Ave., Suite 204, Seattle, WA 98101, (206) 443-3448.

A pre-bid meeting will be held at 2 p .m. Wednesday, March 16, at the Douglass-Truth Branch, 2300 E. Yesler Way.

Library staff members and the architects will be present to review the project requirements.

Current plans call for the expanded branch to be 16,493 feet. The 8,008-square-foot Douglass-Truth Branch opened in 1914. Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation Board voted in November 2001 to designate the branch as a landmark building.

The projected $3.8 million construction project will feature an updated collection of books and materials, more room and better accessibility for the African-American Collection, a new children’s area, more seating and computers, larger and more efficient staff work areas, and upgraded electrical, mechanical and ventilation systems.

The project is part of the $196.4 million “Libraries for All” bond measure that Seattle voters passed in 1998. The bond money, which can be used only for construction of libraries, will fund improvements to all 22 branches, build five new branches and build the new central library.

To date, the Library has completed the new Central Library and the NewHolly, Wallingford, Delridge, Capitol Hill, High Point, North East, Greenwood, Green Lake, Beacon Hill, Rainier Beach and Columbia branches. The Fremont Branch, 731 N. 5th St. is scheduled to open at noon Saturday, April 16. Construction and design is under way for more than a dozen other branches.

The Seattle Public Library Foundation is in the midst of a “Campaign for Seattle’s Public Libraries” with the goal of raising $82 million from private sources to enhance the public bond commitment. Every dollar raised will ensure the library system reflects our community’s needs in buildings, books, technology and people, long into the future.
