THE SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY SEEKS PREQUALIFIED CONTRACTORS TO BUILD THE MONTLAKE AND SOUTHWEST BRANCH PROJECTS

The Seattle Public Library has invited prequalified general contractors to submit bids to build the new Montlake Branch and the expansion of the Southwest Branch.

Bids for the Montlake Branch project are due at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 14. Bids for the Southwest Branch project are due at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 26.

For questions about the Montlake Branch project contact Matt Aalfs, Weinstein A|U Architects + Urban Designers, 121 Stewart St., Ste. 200, Seattle, WA 98101, (206) 443-8606. For questions about the Southwest Branch project, contact Olivier Landa, Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects, 159 S. Jackson St., 6th Floor, Seattle, WA 98104, (206) 624-5670.

Both construction projects have been bid recently and bids have come in higher than anticipated.

The Library believes that prequalified contractors will be encourage to submit competitive bids for the projects because they will know they are competing against firms that the Library has evaluated as being able to complete the work.

A pre-bid site inspection for the Montlake Branch project will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 23 at the project site at 2234 E. McGraw St. A pre-bid site inspection for the Southwest Branch project will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 30 at the Southwest Branch, 9010 35th Ave. S.W. The architects and Library officials will be present to review project requirements.

The estimated value of construction work is between $2.1 million and $2.55 million for the Montlake Branch, and between $3.66 million and $3.84 million for the Southwest Branch. The projects will be awarded as separate contracts to the lowest qualified bidder of each project.

Weinstein A|U Architects + Urban Designers designed the 5,652-square-foot Montlake Branch, which will have an expanded collection of books and materials, more seating and more computers, and a 3,100-square-foot parking garage. The new branch will replace the existing 1,574-square-foot library, which is located in a converted retail store at 2300 24th Ave. E.

Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects designed the expansion to the existing 8,213-square-foot Southwest Branch; the project will feature an updated collection, more computers, new seats and shelves, and an improved interior layout for a total 15,000 square feet.
