The Seattle Design Commission on Thursday honored Alexandra Harris, former capital program director for The Seattle Public Library, for her role in implementing the “Libraries for All” (LFA) building program.
The design commission said the LFA program demonstrated innovation and design excellence in the public realm and commended Harris for: developing overall design goals; creating alternative approaches to siting, building program and design to address myriad community and operational concerns; and developing co-location options with public and private parties. The commission also praised Harris for her persistence in holding to a design vision.
Harris joined the Library in January 1999 to direct the LFA program after Seattle voters in November 1998 passed the $196.4 million LFA bond measure to improve the entire Library system.
To date, the Library has completed 17 projects under the LFA building program, including the internationally known Central Library. Another five branches are expected to open this year and six more branches are in the planning or design stages.
Harris retired from the Library in October 2005.
