Interlibrary Loan

What if I can't find what I'm looking for in the Library Catalog?

If the Library doesn't own an item you want, you may be able to borrow it from another library through an Interlibrary Loan.

What kinds of items can I get through an Interlibrary Loan?

Books, audio books, music scores, journals and newspapers that are more than 12 months old and are NOT owned by The Seattle Public Library. DVDs, videos, music CDs or music cassettes are not available through Interlibrary Loan.

How do I submit an Interlibrary Loan request?

Use one of the following secure online forms:

Or you can stop by any Library location or call 206-386-4636.

How much will this cost me?

There is a fee of $5 for each item obtained through Interlibrary Loan. Late fines are 25 cents a day to a maximum of $15. The Library accepts cash or checks. We cannot accept credit or debit cards.

How will I find out when I can pick up my item?

The Library will notify you when your item is available to pick up. Because of the large number of requests, we are not able to to notify you if an item is unavailable. Most items are received within three weeks, but response times from libraries vary.

What else should I know?

  • Items are usually loaned for 21 days and may not be renewed
  • You may submit up to five Interlibrary Loan requests per week
  • Interlibrary Loans service is available only on accounts with balances less than $15
  • End of list

If you have questions or want to check on a request, call 206-386-4636 with your Library card number and the item title.
