What are the Special Collections?
The Library has four specialized collections and a NEW online digital collection that pay tribute to our region's rich history and culture.
- The Digital Collection makes items from the Library's Special Collections available online. The Library hopes to make more of its Special Collections available online in the future.
The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition Digital Collection features books, pamphlets, invitations, reports, speeches, maps, articles and more. It has been created in honor of the Exposition's centennial in 2009. It includes items from the collection of the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI).
The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was Seattle's first world's fair. Held on the campus of the University of Washington, the event drew almost 4 million visitors and put Seattle on the map as a gateway to the Pacific Rim.
- The Aviation History Collection focuses on the early days of aviation, especially relating to the design, manufacturing and marketing of airplanes from 1930 to 1950. The collection includes publications from the Boeing, Curtiss and Douglas companies and early materials in German and French. The collection does not include current technical materials.
The Aviation History Collection is located in The Maffei Family Aviation Room on Level 7 of the Central Library and is available upon request.
- The Genealogy Collection houses more than 40,000 items dealing primarily with records and families of North America - including those from the original 13 colonies, the Old Northwest Territory and from states referred to as "Gateways to the West."
The Genealogy Collection is located on Level 9 of the Central Library. Three full-time genealogy librarians provide expert reference service to genealogists.
- The Seattle Collection contains items about Seattle's history and includes published materials, Seattle city documents, photographs, newspaper clippings, maps and atlases, high school yearbooks and oral histories. It also features paintings, drawings, metalwork, sculpture, prints and photographs, and includes works by notable local artists such as Paul Horiuchi, George Tsutakawa and Frank Okada.
The Albert Balch Autograph Collection, part of the Seattle Collection, features original letters, photographs and signed copies of published works. It includes signatures by Helen Keller, Babe Ruth and T. S. Elliot.
The Seattle Collection is located in the Hugh and Jane Ferguson Seattle Room on Level 10 of the Central Library.
- The African-American Collection includes material on the African-American experience in the United States, especially in the Northwest.
This collection is located at the Douglass-Truth Branch.
