Computers & Equipment at the Central Library

400 public computers at Central Library:

  • Public computers distributed throughout the building
  • 145 computer stations on Level 5
  • Computers reserved for children on Level 1
  • Computers reserved for teens on Level 3
  • Computers for access to the Library's online catalog and online databases only
  • Computers for Internet access, with filtered access options
  • Computers equipped with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Three computers (two on Level 5 and one on Level 8) with flatbed scanners and image editing software, including Adobe Image Ready, Acrobat Professional and Adobe Photoshop CS1. The two computers on Level 5 also have HP Photosmart Essentials, Microsoft Office Suite 2003, a Web browser, and the ability to burn images onto CDs and DVDs.

A permanent library card is needed to reserve a computer. Guest passes are available at the Mixing Chamber on Level 5.


Computers: Wireless Internet Access

  • Available to users with Wi-Fi enabled laptops and wireless devices
  • Can connect in most areas of the building
  • No hourly or daily user fees
  • Users responsible for configuring own equipment and connecting to network
  • Settings:
    • SSID (Service Set Identifier) or network name = spl-public:
    • Encryption or WEP = disable WEP encryption
    • Mode or Network Type = Infrastructure Mode or Access Point (not ad-hoc)
    • Set TCP/IP properties to "Obtain an IP address automatically" (DHCP)

PLEASE NOTE: The wireless Internet service is not secure and is used at the individual's risk. Even if firewalls are running on laptops, it is recommended that sensitive information not be sent through this network.


Computers: Laptop Plug-in Access

  • Available to users with laptops and RJ-45 10/100 Base-T Ethernet network capability
  • Can connect in most areas of the building
  • No hourly or daily user fees
  • Users responsible for configuring their own equipment, supplying CAT-5 cables and connecting to the network
  • Setting: Set TCP/IP properties to "Obtain an IP address automatically" (DHCP)

Adaptive Equipment

Most of this equipment is located in Library Equal Access Program (LEAP) on Level 3.

  • Teletypewriter (TTY) for deaf patrons with TTY equipment

Copiers & Printers

  • Copy machines, printers, pay stations available throughout the building
  • Pay for print system: requires a library card or guest pass to set up an account.
    Used for:
    • Printing from computers
    • Copier
    • Microfilm and microfiche printing
    Fees:
    • $.10 per page for printing
    • $.15 per page for a black and white copy
    • $1 for a color copy (available at the Central Library)
  • Free printing from library catalog only
  • Coin-operated copiers on Level 3

  • Pay phones on Level 1 and Level 3
  • Audible cell phone and pager ringers must be turned off.
