'Danger: Books!' A Celebration of Intellectual Freedom
Book-It Repertory Theatre brought its "Danger: Books!" program to the Central Library on Sept. 21, 2009. This event marked Banned Books Week, which is nationally recognized Sept. 26 - Oct. 3, 2009. Attendees learned how to prepare for the SAT or ACT, and discovered scholarship resources on November 19, 2008 at the Central Library. Sam Lim, founder of Scholarship Junkies, discussed the vast resources available and how to use these tools to maximize scholarship potential. A representative from Kaplan discussed how to prepare for the SAT or ACT.

Comixtravaganza: Ellen Forney
Ellen Forney, acclaimed local cartoonist, illustrator and teacher, spoke about her work Jan. 26 at the Central Library. Ellen Forney is the author of several books, including "I Love Led Zeppelin" and MONKEY FOOD: The Complete "I Was Seven in '75" Collection. Comixtravaganza: Teen Center Advisor Danielle interviews the 'Getting Into Comics' Panel
On Saturday, January 26, the library celebrated the finale of a month-long Comixtravaganza-a system-wide celebration of comics, manga, graphic novels, and the artists who make them. The day began with a comic-making workshop, hosted by local cartoonist David Lasky. It continued with a panel called "Getting Into Comics," featuring local cartoonists and members of the comics industry. Teen Center Advisors: Nick and Zack review books aimed at teen girls
In this first episode, Nick and Zack review two books aimed at teen girls: The Quiz Life by Marina Khidekel and Guyaholic by Carolyn Mackler. Since both reviews were negative, they sparked a discussion among the group about what kinds of books are marketed at teen girls, what makes them good or bad, and how they might be judged fairly. The girls in the group recommended some quality teen titles aimed at girls for Zack and Nick to try.

Nick Hornby: 'Slam'
Nick Hornby read from his first novel for teens, Slam, Wednesday, Oct. 24
at the Central Library. The New Yorker called Hornby "the maestro of the male confessional." His bestselling adult novels include High Fidelity and About a Boy, both of which were made into movies.
