Summer Reading Programs for Children, Teens and Adults

The Seattle Public Library offers more than 750 free programs all over the city for children, teens and adults this summer. Below is a list of program highlights. Select the title to see dates and locations.


Author Readings and Lectures for ages 13 to adult - The Library offers many author readings and lectures during the summer.


African Drumming - West African performers from Gansango Music & Dance demonstrate the wide variety of drums found across Africa, teach drum rhythms and how to make simple drums. For all ages.


American Sign Language Story Time - Deaf storyteller Gerardo Di Pietro presents stories in American Sign Language with voice translation for hearing children and parents. For ages 4 and under.


Anansi the Spider - Anansi the spider plays tricks on everyone and gets into a lot of trouble. Oregon Shadow Theatre brings this West African trickster to life with music and colorful puppets. For all ages


Bee-Boppin' Bugs! - Join favorite Northwest performer Nancy Stewart for this fun-filled concert packed with cool facts about our tiny buzzing, creeping, and crawling friends. For ages 10 and under.


Bookmaking for Kids/for Teens and up - Learn a unique and fun book-making technique with talented and creative instructors from the Seattle Center for Book Arts. Programs for ages 6 - 12 and ages 12 and up;.


Burke Circus - Join the Burke Museum for this interactive game with familiar storybook characters, real museum specimens, puppets, and prizes. For ages 10 and under.


Capa de cuentos - Los Nietos presents a bilingual series of short Latin American stories, along with live music, ancient history, shadow puppets and traditional costume. For ages 3 - adult.


Cutie-Licious II: Crafting Felt Mascots for Teens - Like cute stuff? Check out the world's cutest miniature felt creatures! These little cuties are fun to make! For ages 11 and up. Please register with the branch.


Duct Tape Mania - Find out what you can do with a roll of duct tape! Roses, picture frames, wallets, and more can all be made with duct tape. For ages 12 - 18.


Game On - Get your game on at the Library! Gaming fun for different ages.


Hands-On Henna! - Create and wear great-looking art! Learn about the fascinating history and traditions of henna with artist Krysteen Lomonaco. For ages 6 - adult. Please register with the branch.


Images of China - Experience an amazing Chinese puppet show performed by the renowned puppet masters from Dragon Arts Studio. For all ages


Kaleta: African Masked Dance - West African performers from Gansango Music & Dance use masked dance, stories and drumming to share an African festival called "Kaleta." For all ages.


Movie Time at the Library - Come to the Library to enjoy a movie and some snacks!


Nature Programs for all ages - Join the Nature Consortium to learn to draw, make prints, create art from recycled materials or origami plants and animals; take a nighttime walk in the woods; a visit to a local beaver dam; or talk with Seattle Audubon's teen naturalists.


Ponte el Ritmo (Put Your Rhythm On!) - Bring your clapping hands and dancing feet to this high-energy call-and-response singing and rhythm workshop! For all ages.


Read a Book/Share a Book - Come and share book recommendations with your friends and neighbors and find out what others in the community are reading and recommending. For ages 16 - adult.


Recess Monkey: Field Trip! - Recess Monkey, Seattle's hottest band for kids and families, presents this rocking kickoff to summer vacation! Take a field trip to the Central Library! For all ages.


Snakes: Friend or Foe? - Learn all about snakes in this program led by wildlife educator Nick Sutton. For ages 7 - adult.


Sounds of Vietnam - Canadian duo Khac Chi combines the traditional folk music of Vietnam with lively new arrangements, light-hearted humor and creative stage antics! For ages 4 - adult.


Summer Magic - Join Black belt magician and "Creative Conjuror" Jeff Evans for magical mayhem that add up to total fun or Rick Anderson on a journey of imagination! For ages 5-10.


Tales from the Urban Wilderness - Jourdan Keith and her cedar flute will delight you with tall tales, retold fables and an urban version of the Anansi trickster. For ages 6 - adult.


Teen Mash-up - Calling all teens! This summer create your own video game or comic book, watch new anime, eat gross food - or lots of pizza - and much more.


Watercolor Workshop - Join us for a free watercolor class at the Library! For ages 7 - 12. Please register with the branch.


Zine Drop-in/Zinery 101 - A zine is a self-published magazine. Spend time with other zine-enthusiasts or make your own zine. For ages 12 -adult. Please register with the branch for Zinery 101.
