Summer Reading Program

The 2009 Summer Reading Program ended on August 30. During the summer, the Library hosted over 750 FREE programs all over the city.

Children, teens and adults all joined in the fun. They read over 100,000 books, became fans of the Library's Summer Reading Facebook page and shared their favorite books, movies and music by submitting an online review.

Thank you for participating and making this year's program a big hit.

Summer Reading for All Ages

Why does the Library offer the Summer Reading Program for all ages?

  • To nurture a sense of community - The Library is a great place to meet your neighbors! Teens who are active in their communities are more likely to grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible adults.
  • To encourage reading for pleasure - Did you know that just six minutes of reading can reduce stress levels by more than two-thirds? That's better than sipping a cup of tea, taking a long walk or listening to music!
  • To help our children learn - Research shows that students who read four to five books over the summer score better on fall reading tests.
  • To provide opportunities for lifelong learning - The pursuit of knowledge through lifelong learning has wonderful benefits for adults, especially those over the age of 50!
  • End of list
