The Seattle Public Library to require Personal Identification Numbers at self-checkout stations starting Jan. 7, 2008
Starting Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, all self-checkout stations at The Seattle Public Library will require Library cardholders to enter their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs).
"The Library values the security of our patron records and asking for PINs at self-checkout stations reflects this priority," said Megan Taylor, the Library's manager of Borrower Services.
Taylor noted that the Library already requires patrons to use their PINs for many online services, such as placing holds, reserving a computer and paying for printed copies. "Patrons who learn their PINs now will be better equipped to explore the Library's other online services," Taylor said.
King County Library System requires patrons to enter PINs at self-checkout stations, as do many other comparable library systems.
Patrons who do not know their PINs may ask a Library staff member or call Borrower Services at 206-386-4190.
