Joe Fithian, security manager for The Seattle Public Library, recently graduated from FEMA's Emergency Manager Basic Academy at the Emergency Management Institute in Emmitburg, Md.

Fithian, a resident of Sammamish, Wash., is one of 32 students from across the U.S. who completed the training courses that provide basic knowledge and skills to help meet the unpredictable challenges in the field of emergency management. Fithian completed the final four courses in the Basic Academy series that includes the Science of Disaster; Planning: Emergency Operations; Exercise Design; and Public Information and Warning.  The graduates fulfilled a total of 171 hours of training, including a course in the Foundations of Emergency Management.

The Emergency Manager Basic Academy offers the tools to develop comprehensive foundational skills needed in emergency management.  For those who are new to emergency management, or for those who are transferring from another profession, the Basic Academy provides a unique opportunity to build camaraderie and establish professional contacts.   Students also learned to understand the roles, responsibilities and legal boundaries associated with emergency management.
